Welcome!
June 20th, 2007As the former COO for Fixstars Solutions, founder and CEO for Terra Soft Solutions (which was acquired in 2008 by Fixstars), I am happily self-employed once again.
In this capacity, I renew my effort to seek balance between that in me which desires expression of creativity through business, invention, travel, climbing, and writing. I also serve on the Board for SpanAfrica, lending my experience in building sustainable, scalable communication and knowledge sharing solutions, and as a hands-on volunteer in Africa.
My blog is not often a place where I often share my opinion, rather where I share stories of my experience in this world. For ten years (1999-2008) I wrote about technology as an integral component of my work, with a focus on open source, Linux, and supercomputing. Now I return to my fascination with the experience of being human at a time when social structures are evolving at an unprecedented rate, and in ways only possible with the advancement of global communications.
In 2005 I wrote a short-lived, weekly column for ECT News (see category “MacNewsWorld”) which discussed the how we as social, emotional and spiritual creatures incorporate rapidly evolving technology into our daily lives. I did not approach this from the traditional view that technology saves time (a century old myth that perpetuates today) and improves the quality of our lives (this too is arguably false), but instead looked at how we engage each other through the use of digital communication, shaping our sense of self and others. This aspect of our modern existence tells our story using the medium itself as a means of expression, and remains of great interest to me.
I receive great pleasure through the sharing of stories, the one thing all humans hold common, from person to person, family to family, town to country and continent. What will be the story of our time, told a centuries from now?
I appreciate your interest in my stories, and do hope you will find them worthy of a routine, return visit. –kai
